Men’s Soccer grounds Flying Fleeting in season-opening victory

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Behind the lone goal of the night from senior forward Joan Bauza Sureda, the Converse University men's soccer team defeated the Erskine Flying Fleet 1-0 in their Thursday-night home opener.

Sureda's shot, taken just over eight minutes into the game, was the first shot of the game, quickly putting the Valkyries up 1-0. It was all they would need to secure the victory. Overall, the Valkyries outshot the Flying Fleet 19-2.

Converse took all 11 shots in the first half as they dominated time of possession during the first 45 minutes. Erskine did not attempt a shot until the 66th minute, giving sophomore goalkeeper Tim Baerwalde his first save in a purple and gold. The Flying Fleet took just one more shot the rest of the match.

With the Valkyries' offense controlling the rest of the game, Converse secured the 1-0 victory to wrap-up the season-opening victory.

The Valkyries are back on the pitch Wednesday, Sept. 6 as they head to Mars Hill to take on the Lions at 7:30 p.m.
