Box Score GAFFNEY, S.C.- As the rain poured down on the pitch, the Valkyries couldn't find their groove as Converse fell to Limestone 2-0 in the Conference Carolinas opener on Saturday evening. Converse falls to 1-3-0 on the young season, while Limestone improves to 4-0-0.
Converse couldn't capitalize on their opportunities as they were shutout for the second time this season. The Valkyries posted six shots with three of those being on target.
Converse started off the attack with a corner kick in the 8'. Ella Ritchie (Derby, England) would find Darby Boyd (Nags Head, N.C.) inside the box off the corner but Boyd's shot sailed just wide of the top corner.
Limestone would counter in the 19' and 21' scoring off a free kick that was served into the box to take a 1-0 lead. In the 21' Limestone would push the advantage to 2-0 scoring off a deflected shot and out of the reach of the keeper.
The Valkyries would settle in after the second Limestone goal but couldn't find the back of the net themselves.
Claudia Coffin (Springboro, Ohio) had the best opportunity of the first half in the 38' barely missing the post. Converse trailed at the half 2-0.
Converse had chances in the second half but the Saints held tough. Alex Marquez (West Hill, Calif.) tallied three shots (all on target).
Josee Waitrovich (Waupaca, Wisc.) took the loss in the cage finishing with seven saves on 15 shots.
The Purple and Gold defense held Limestone scoreless the final 69:55 of the match.
Converse returns to Conference Carolinas action on Wednesday September 16 at 5pm.
