Valkyries Conclude Season in First Round of Conference Carolinas Championship

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The No. 8 Converse University women's soccer team (4-6-7, 4-5-4 Conference Carolinas) drew with the No. 9 North Greenville Trailblazers (3-8-6, 3-5-5 Conference Carolinas) 1-1 for the second time this season as the teams squared off in the opening round of the Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Championship on Wednesday evening. The Trailblazers advanced 4-3 on penalty kicks.

After a scoreless first half, freshman defender Hayleigh Winkler scored her first career goal in the 61st minute on an assist from senior forward Sierra Criner.

Just under a minute and a half later, North Greenville tied the game.

The game remained tied for the next 27 minutes, despite both teams having opportunities. The same was true of the two ten-minute overtime periods.

Despite a Trailblazer miss to start the shootout, two Converse misses later in the sequence sealed the 4-3 advantage for North Greenville, allowing them to advance to take on No. 1 UNC Pembroke on Saturday.
