Box Score GEORGETOWN, KY.- Converse handed #3 Georgetown (Ky.) College its first loss of the season as the Valkyries extended its winning streak to a program best five straight, taking the victory 9-5 in non-conference action on Friday evening. Converse improves to 5-3 on the season, while Georgetown (Ky.) falls to 3-1.
"The whole team rose to the occasion to get the job done," said Coach Ryan Weiss. "We knew at half time that we needed to go out there and get the job done against a really good team. We played with a lot of passion and heart to gut out a very big win. We are playing the best lacrosse of the season and continuing to get better every single day."
Chelsea Worrell (Orlando, Fla.) paced the Valkyries with six goals, scoring a hat-trick in the first half. Sydnie Hickey (Baltimore, Md.), Laura Starkes (Whitby, Ontario) and Madison Butler (Tampa, Fla.) scored one goal each.
Alex Gurecki (Farmingdale, N.Y.) picked up the win in the cage recording six saves and allowed a season-low five goals.
Laura Starkes scored the opening goal of the match just 1:24 into the match giving the Valkyries an early 1-0 lead. Georgetown (Ky.) responded posting three unanswered goals within a five minute span to take the lead 3-1.
Converse didn't let the early deficit affect them as the Valkyries started chipping away. Madison Butler cut into the Tiger advantage scoring with just under 20 minutes to play in the first half.
Chelsea Worrell would take over the match scoring three of the four Valkyrie goals to close the first half and take a 6-3 advantage into the break. Worrell's first goal came at the 12:30 mark converting on a free position shot. Deena Kasmarik (Suwanee, Ga.) would win the draw leading to another Worrell goal just 1:09 after her first goal, tying things at 3-all
Sydnie Hickey would give the Valkyries the lead for good scoring an unassisted goal with 1:15 remaining in the first half. Thirty five seconds later Worrell struck again for her hat-trick.
The Tigers narrowed the gap to 6-4 coming out of the half scoring a minute into the half. Worrell would pick up another goal at the 19:28 mark to push the Valkyrie advantage to 7-4.
Georgetown (Ky.) would score their final goal of the match at the 13:44 mark with a man-down goal. Chelsea Worrell would pad the stat sheet adding two more goals to her total giving the Valkyries a 9-5 advantage.
Converse is scheduled to play Asbury Saturday, March 14. With the inclement weather in the area, the status of the match is not clear.
Worrell's six goals is tied for second most in program history. The first time a Valkyrie has scored six goals in a match since Brooke Bondurant scored six against Catawba February 24, 2013.
