Valkyries Celebrate Senior Day Against Young Harris

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University Lacrosse team fell 12-10 to Young Harris on Saturday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.

With the loss the Valkyries drop to 4-7 overall and 3-2 in Conference Carolinas action. Meanwhile, Young Harris improves to 8-3 overall and 6-0 in Conference Carolinas play. Hailey Obenchain once again led the Valkyries offensively with a four goal and one assist performance against the Mountain Lions. With her fourth goal of the afternoon, Obenchain became the first player to score 160 goals in her career.

Becky Reinhard finished second on the team with two goals, while Ally Benken, Karter Lauer, Kaitlyn Oliver and Zoey Jacobs all scored in the loss. Benken, Reinhard and Jacobs also recorded one assist each. Defensively, Alyssa Corder had a team high three caused turnovers and Ava Andrews had two caused turnovers. Andrews also led the team with four groundballs on the afternoon, while Obenchain had a team best nine draw control wins. Skee finished the day with nine saves against the Mountain Lions.

Young Harris struck first in the opening quarter, as they scored a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the contest. Obenchain answered back a few moments later with a pair of unassisted goals, tying the game at two. Erika Baalam gave Young Harris a 3-2 edge with 6:15 to play in the opening period. Only 15 seconds had elapsed off the clock when Obenchain scored her third goal, keeping the match knotted at three goals each.

Riley Parker then scored her third goal of the period to give Young Harris a goal advantage with less than four minutes to play in the quarter. About a minute later, Reinhard found Jacobs for the woman up goal to give the Valkyries their fourth goal of the game. The match went into the second quarter tied at four goals each.

Once again, Young Harris scored the first two goals of the second quarter. Karter Lauer scored with 6:06 to go in the half to pull the Valkyries back within a goal down 6-5. A few seconds later and the Mountain Lions were back up by two. Obenchain and Reinhard both scored before the end of the half, as both teams went into the locker room dead even at seven goals each.

In the third quarter, Young Harris scored a pair of woman up goals in the first five minutes of the period to take a 9-7 edge over the Valkyries. Ally Benken scored with 10 minutes remaining in the period to pull the Valkyries back within a goal. Neither team was able to score in the final nine minutes of action in the third quarter, as Converse trailed 9-8 going into the four period.

Riley Parker scored the first goal of the fourth quarter and the Mountain Lions once again held a two goal advantage. A few minutes later, Jacobs found Reinhard for the Valkyries ninth goal of the contest. Young Harris scored two more goals at the 5:52 and 4:09 marks of the quarter to build a three goal lead over the Valkyries. Obenchain found Kaitlyn Oliver in the final minute of the game, but it was too late for the Valkyries as they fell by a final score of 12-10.

Next Up:
The Converse lacrosse team will be back in action at home this coming Tuesday night as they battle North Greenville. The game is slated to start at 6:00 p.m.
