Valkyries Bully Bulldogs

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University Lacrosse team dominated from start to finish on Saturday afternoon, as they defeated Barton 15-3 at Weisiger Stadium.

With the win the Valkyries kick a two game losing streak and improve to 5-8 overall and 4-3 in Conference Carolinas action. Meanwhile, Barton drops to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in Conference Carolinas play.

Becky Reinhard led the Valkyries offensively with eight goals against the Bulldogs. Karter lauer finished second on the team with three goals, while Hailey Obenchain, Ally Benken, Kaitlyn Oliver and Zoey Jacobs all added a goal in the win. Jacobs had a team high five assists, while Obenchain, Lauer, Megan Holleran and Brooklyn Walker each had an assist in the game.

Defensively, Obenchain, Kayla Gooden, Alyssa Corder and Samantha Sparks all had two caused turnovers. Maia Marquez, Ainsley Cua and Holleran all added a caused turnover in the win. Obenchain led the team with five groundballs, Cua and Gooden both finished with three groundballs each. Abigail Skee had a team best six saves in the win over the Bulldogs.

Barton scored first in the opening quarter, when Andrea Davila drove in unassisted just three minutes into the game. Obenchain connected with Reinhard less than 60 seconds later to tie the game at one. Both Obenchain and Reinhard scored once more before the period was up and Converse took a 3-1 lead into the second quarter of action.

In the second quarter it was all Converse as they outscored Barton 7-1 in the period. Jacobs, Reinhard, Lauer and Oliver all scored in the second quarter for the Valkyries. Converse went into the halftime break up 10-2.

Benken and Reinhard both scored in the third quarter to give the Valkyries a running clock. In the fourth quarter both Lauer and Reinhard scored, while Barton added their third goal of the game in the fourth period.  

Next Up:
The Converse lacrosse team will be back in action at home this coming Wednesday night as they battle Coker. The game is slated to start at 6:00 p.m.
