Valkyries Fall to Saint Leo, 11-9

SPARTANBURG, S.C.-  The Valkyries took the field today and battled the rain in the last home match of the season. The Valkyries took on the Lions of Saint Leo College from Saint Leo, Florida. The two teams went head to head for most of the game, until Saint Leo went on a two goal run with ten minutes left in the second half, ultimately defeating Converse 11-9. Saint Leo is now 8-7 overall, while Converse finishes their regular season play 7-9.

For the Lions, a trio of Bethanny Jolly, Christina Minneci, and Allie Sheftall led the offense with two goals each. Also contributing one goal apiece for Saint Leo was Kelsey Burns, Kelly Smigiera, Danica Leili, Erica Zigon, and Alix Murray. On the defensive side Kelsey Burns led in ground balls with two, while Allie Sheftall led in draw controls with four. Goal keeper Kaylyn Kearns spent all sixty minutes in the goal, allowing nine goals with four saves.

Saint Leo dominated in draw controls picking up sixteen while Converse only picked up six. Converse led in ground balls with thirteen, compared to Saint Leo who only picked up eleven ground balls.

For the Valkyries Sydnie Hickey led the offense with four goals, behind her were teammates Amelia Helm and Jordy Taylor with two goals. Emma Murphy contributed one goal as well. Helm and Hickey led draw controls, both with two. Goal keeper Alex Gurecki spent all sixty minutes in the goal allowing eleven goals with nine saves.

The Valkyries finished up their regular season league play this week, securing the number six seed for the Conference Carolinas Tournament. The Valkyries will travel to play the number three seed, the Trojans of Mount Olive University, on Tuesday, April 22nd for the first round of tournament play. The game will begin at 4:00 PM.
