Valkyries Battle Saints to a Draw

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C.-  The Cross town rivalry did not disappoint on Saturday night as Converse and Limestone battled to a 1-1 draw.  Converse moves to 11-1-1 on the season and remains unbeaten in league play at 6-0-1.  Limestone moves to 7-2-3 on the season and 5-1-2 in Conference Carolinas play.

The aggressive nature of the Valkyries' opponents came through again for Converse.  Limestone's aggressiveness was the difference in the match as the Valkyries took advantage of the opportunity in the waning minutes of the match.  Bethany Spivey (Greensboro, N.C.) set up a free kick from 35 yards out.  Spivey had taken two free kicks earlier in the match from just outside the box and sailed them high.  On this free kick, Spivey drills it over the Limestone keeper's head and puts it top shelf for the equalizer in the 85'.

Limestone jumped on the board early in the match off a corner kick.  Limestone's Winglosky took the corner and found the head of Ashton Bowels for the 1-0 lead in the 12'.  The Limestone corner came off a breakaway by Gabbie Reid.  Reid launched one over the keeper and the net and was given a corner.

Both defenses played tough for the full 110'.  Neither squad could find the golden goal it needed in the two overtime periods, settling for a 1-1 draw.

Converse dominated the first OT period with Alex Marquez (West Hill, Calif.) blasting one off the cross bar.  The Valkyries had four shots in the first OT and finished the match with 24 shots (9 on goal).  Limestone picked up the pace in the second OT recording two shots.  Limestone finished the match with 16 shots (4 on goal).

Converse remains atop the Conference Carolinas standings as the only remaining unbeaten squad at 6-0-1.  The Valkyries battle against Pfeiffer on Wednesday, Oct. 22 on the road against the Falcons.  Pfeiffer sits in a tie with the Valkyries with 19 points in the standings.

First touch is slated for 2pm in Misenheimer, N.C.
