Jean Marie Harris scored 23 points for the Flying Fleet of Erskine, and it was her leaning jumper with 2 seconds left in the game that dropped to end Converse's winning streak with a 79-81 defeat.
Erskine (3-8 overall, 2-4 Conference Carolinas) opened the game on a 30-11 tear during the first 10 minutes of the half. Converse (3-11 overall, 3-4 Conference Carolinas) responded with a 26-15 tear of their own to close the first-half, but still found themselves down 45-37.
To begin the second-half the Flying Fleet held their lead steadily at 66-55 with 10:50 remaining, but the Valkyries rallied over the next 4 minutes of play to draw the game even at 72-72 with 6:32 remaining. Harris scored 5 of the Fleet's next 7 points to give them a 79-75 lead with 3:24 remaining, but once again Converse found a way to draw back and tied the game at 79-79 with 28 seconds remaining. The Fleet ran the clock down before Porsha Morgan found the hot hand again, dishing to Harris who sealed the victory for Erskine.
Converse was led by senior Latrell Nickens (Sumter, SC) with 19 points, junior Brandy Williams (Spartanburg, SC) who had 17 points and 7 rebounds, and sophomore Katy Vaughan (Lebanon, TN) contributing 14 points and 7 rebounds.
For Erskine, Harris was helped by the strong double-double of Neci Allen with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and the unstoppable play of Morgan who had 25 points (8-of-12), 4 rebounds, and 5 assists.
The Valkyries will travel to Gaffney, SC next to play Limestone on Jan. 18th at 5:30PM.
