Bandel and Bankirer Net Goals As Valkyries Down Crusaders

BELMONT, N.C. – An early goal from sophomore forward Jacob Bandel and a late penalty-kick goal from fellow sophomore forward Levi Bankirer lifted the Converse University men's soccer team (5-2-3, 3-1-2 Conference Carolinas) past the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (3-6-2, 2-5 Conference Carolinas) by a final score of 2-0 Wednesday evening at Alumni Field on the campus of Belmont Abbey College.

Freshman goalkeeper Thiago Ausland made his 10th start of the season in as many games and played all 90 minutes for the sixth time this season. He recorded three saves on four shots on goal from the Crusaders. He was aided by a defensive save in the 82nd minute en route to his first career clean sheet.

About halfway through the 20th minute, Bandel found the back of the net on an assist from Bankirer.

The Valkyries held onto that one-goal lead well into the second half when Bandel was fouled in the box, resulting in a Belmont Abbey yellow card and a Converse penalty kick. Bankirer attempted and buried the penalty kick to double the lead and bring the game to its eventual final score of 2-0.

Next Up For the Valkyries:
The Valkyries return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 3, as they host another divisional foe, the North Greenville Trailblazers, at Weisiger Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 P.M.
