Valkyries Pulverize Panthers

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's soccer team steam rolled through Ferrum 6-2 on Saturday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.
 
The Valkyries improved to 1-3-1 overall and 1-2-0 in Conference Carolinas action this season. Meanwhile, Ferrum drops to 1-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in Conference Carolinas play. The Valkyries six goal outburst was their most since scoring seven against Shorter last season.
 
Converse got the scoring started early on Saturday afternoon, as Sierra Criner put one in the back of the net just eight minutes into the contest. The Valkyries continued to push in the opening half, then at the 23 minute mark of the period McKenzie Buncy found Criner for the second goal of the game.
 
A few minutes later, Ferrum began to control the ball a little more on their offensive side of the pitch. At the 25 minute mark of the first half, Breanna Herlihy scored her fourth goal of the season to put the Panthers on the board.
 
Converse went into the halftime break up 2-1, the Valkyries outshot the Panthers 9-5 in the opening half and attempted three corner kicks.
 
Early in the second half, Summer Stevens found Herlihy for the equalizing goal for Ferrum. The game remained tied for the next 20 minutes of action as the Panthers controlled the pace of play. Then in the 76th minute of action, Tatiana Martinez found Emily Vargas for the go-ahead score for the Valkyries.
 
About 90 seconds later Charlie Morgan found Sam Quillen for the Valkyries fourth goal of the afternoon. In the 85th minute of action Catherine Clark passed to Keira Smylie who scored her first goal of the season for the Valkyries. Less than a minute later, Sheli Bershadski put the finishing touches on the game with her first goal of the season.
 
Next up for the Valkyries:
Converse will hit the road for a midweek matchup against Emmanuel on Wednesday afternoon. The match is set to start at 4:30 p.m.
