Davis’ and Karabach’s Homers Lead to Saturday Split With Shorter

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Madison Davis and freshman Tyler Karabach notched home runs in game one of the Converse University softball team's doubleheader with the Shorter University Hawks on Saturday at Tyger River Stadium, leading to the Valkyries taking game one 2-1. The Hawks won game two 7-1.

With the split, Converse moves to 7-21 on the season and 4-4 in Conference Carolinas play. Shorter is now 10-21 and 4-8 in conference action.

Freshman pitcher Gracee Stucki tossed a complete game in game one, earning her fifth win of the season. It was also her seventh complete game this year.

Game One: Converse 2, Shorter 1

Shorter collected four hits through the first two and a half innings, but it was Converse who struck first as Davis broke up the no-hitter with a lead-off solo home run to open the third inning.

Shorter tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out RBI double.

Karabach broke up the tie ballgame in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out solo shot.

The Hawks loaded the bases with just one out in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout and a lineout ended the game in a 2-1 Converse victory.

Game Two: Shorter 7, Converse 1

Shorter struck first in the top of the first on a two-out RBI double into right-center field.

Sophomore Charley Swartzel notched a lead-off single in the bottom of the inning, but the Valkyries were unable to manufacture a run.

Both teams went scoreless in the second and third innings before Shorter doubled their lead on a one-out sac fly.

Sophomore Olivia Jones came around to score in the bottom of the fifth after reaching second on a lead-off ground-rule double. Graduate student Megan Monk notched the RBI on a single into left-center field.

The Hawks struck for five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Converse went down in order in both the sixth and seventh as Shorter won 7-1.
