BELMONT, N.C. – The Converse University softball team needed extra innings for the second time in five games, but came out victorious in game two of their doubleheader with the Belmont Abbey Crusaders, winning 8-7 in eight innings. The Crusaders won game one 1-0.
With the split, Converse moves to 8-22 overall and 4-6 in Conference Carolinas play. The Valkyries are 2-4 against the Northwest Division. Belmont Abbey moves to 9-15 overall and 3-5 in conference play. They are 2-2 in divisional games.
Freshman Gracee Stucki earned the win in game two for 5.0 innings of relief work. She also tossed a complete game in game one.
Game One: Belmont Abbey 1, Converse 0
The teams combined for just five total hits, the first of which came to lead off the bottom of the second for the Crusaders. Stucki struck out the next two batters and induced a groundout to end the inning unscathed.
The game's next hit came in the top of the fourth inning as sophomore Sophia Naese notched a two-out single into left center. A runner in the bottom of the inning reached on a single but was called out for leaving the base early.
After a scoreless fifth inning, senior Madison Davis doubled with a runner on first base, putting two Valkyries in scoring position with two outs, but a strikeout ended the half inning.
After the Crusaders loaded the bases with no outs, Stucki threw out the lead runner at the plate with a glove flip to home. A one-out walk on the next at-bat brought home the game's only run. Stucki again got an out at home plate to prevent a run and struck out the next batter, minimizing the damage. Belmont Abbey held on to win 1-0.
Game Two: Converse 8, Belmont Abbey 7 (8 Inn.)
Belmont Abbey again struck first in game two, this time scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Seniors Kiarra Thomas and Madison Davis both drove in runs for the Valkyries in the top of the third, with an intervening score from a wild pitch, evening the game 3-3. A lead-off single came around to score in the bottom half of the inning, putting Belmont Abbey back on top 4-3.
Sophomore Myah Zuniga, senior Aubree Leonard, Thomas and Davis all recorded RBIs in the top of the fourth inning as Converse took a 7-4 lead, their first lead of the day.
A three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning evened the game once again, 7-7.
Converse threatened with a runner on third in the sixth inning, but didn't score the winning run until the 8th inning as senior Jaydin Gentile, who started the inning on second base via extra-innings rules, came around to score on a sac fly from Leonard.
Belmont Abbey failed to score their own runner as the Valkyries won 8-7.
