Game Recap: Softball |

Valkyries Fall to North Greenville in Wednesday Doubleheader

SPARTANBRUG, S.C. – The Converse University softball team dropped both games of their divisional doubleheader with the North Greenville Trailblazers on Wednesday afternoon at Tyger River Stadium. The Trailblazers took game one 14-1 in five innings and game two 4-3 in 10 innings.

The Valkyries fall to 6-20 overall and 2-4 in Conference Carolinas action. North Greenville improves to 14-10 and 5-1 in conference play.

Senior Kiarra Thomas drove in all three of the Valkyries' runs in game two with a go-ahead double in the sixth inning.

Game One: North Greenville 14, Converse 1 (5 Inn.)

NGU opened the scoring with a one-out RBI single in the top of the first inning. They added six more in the top of the second inning.

After a scoreless third from the Trailblazers, sophomore Olivia Jones led off the bottom of the inning with a single into left field for the Valkyries' first hit of the game.

NGU added seven more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Alexis Felker brought home the Valkyries' only run of the game with a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of that inning.

Neither team scored in the fifth inning as North Greenville won 14-1.

Game Two: North Greenville 4, Converse 3 (10 Inn.)

North Greenville struck first again, plating two runs in the top of the first inning.

It wouldn't be until the sixth inning that either team scored again, with Thomas driving home three runs in the bottom of the frame with a one-out, three-RBI double into center field.

The Valkyries' lead was short-lived as a lead-off triple in the top of the seventh came around to score two batters later on an RBI bunt single. The Trailblazers loaded the bases with just one out, but freshman Gracee Stucki induced an infield fly and ended the inning on a swinging strikeout to leave the game tied 3-3.

Despite the runner who started on second base in the eighth inning reaching third with just one out, Stucki left her there by getting two consecutive batters to pop out on the infield. Converse had their own runner reach third with one out, but she too was left stranded.

NGU did the same in the ninth, but the Valkyries' ninth-inning runner was cut down attempting to retreat back to second base.

A one-out bunt single from the Trailblazers brought home the go-ahead run in the tenth inning, and NGU held on to win 4-3.
