Valkyries Unable to Hang With Hawks

SPARTANBURG, S.C.   The Converse University women's basketball fell to the Chowan University Hawks 88-58 Monday afternoon at the Weisiger Center.

Converse falls to 4-23 on the season and 3-16 in conference play. Chowan improves to 15-8 overall and 13-6 in Conference Carolinas action.

Junior Tatiana Brown led the Valkyries with 20 points. Senior Mazie Helpman netted Converse 18 points.

How It Happened
Chowan raced out to an early lead, reaching five points, 9-4, with 6:16 remaining in the opening quarter. The Valkyries fought back to tie the game at 9-9 with just under five minutes remaining in the quarter and took the lead 11-9 with just under four minutes left in the opening 10 minutes. Chowan had a 10-6 swing to cap off the quarter, taking a two-point, 19-17, lead into the second quarter.

The Valkyries tied the game once again in the second quarter, evening things up at 21 points each with 7:51 remaining in the first half. Chowan answered with 11 straight points over the next three and a half minutes to break the game open. The Hawks added five more points to their lead after that to take a 15-point, 41-26, lead into halftime.

Chowan outscored the Valkyries by 10 points in the third quarter and five points in the fourth quarter, winning the game 88-58.

  • Brown led the Valkyries with 20 points. She shot 7-13 from the field and 5-6 from the free throw line. She made her only three-point shot of the game.
  • Helpman and fellow senior Alexis Becker also tallied double-digit efforts.
  • Graduate student Janiyah Hagood led Converse with six rebounds.
  • Seven Valkyries recorded at least one point and 11 Valkyries recorded at least one rebound.
  • Becker dished out six assists.
  • Brown recorded the Valkyries only block of the game.
