Valkyries Down No. 21 Eagles For Program’s First-Ever Ranked Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University softball team secured the program's first-ever ranked victory on Tuesday afternoon with a 6-5 walk-off victory against the No. 21 Carson-Newman Eagles in game one of the teams' doubleheader. Carson-Newman won game two 13-4.

The Valkyries move to 3-15 on the season while the Eagles are now 14-2 on the season.

Freshman Gracee Stucki earned her third win in the circle of the season.

Junior Karlie Gibson blasted the walk-off long bomb in game one. Senior Aubree Leonard led Converse with three RBIs.

Game One: Converse 6, No. 21 Carson-Newman 5

Carson-Newman opened the game up with four runs in the top of the first. Converse cut into the lead in the bottom of the first as Leonard hit a lead-off triple and came around to score on an RBI single from freshman Tyler Karabach.

The Eagles scored one in the top of the third inning but it wasn't until the fourth inning that Converse responded.

In the fourth, Karabach hit a lead-off single and came around to score on the next at-bat as junior Kiarra Thomas hit a two-run shot. Leonard drove in two with a one-out bases-loaded single, tying the game 5-5.

Both teams went quiet in the fifth and sixth innings before Gibson hit the walk-off shot to give the Valkyries their first-ever ranked victory 6-5.

Game Two: No. 21 Carson-Newman 13, Converse 4

Carson-Newman opened the game with six runs in the top of the first. Converse cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second as junior Madison Davis, Leonard and Karabach all drove in runs.

A one-out single in the top of the fourth gave Carson-Newman a four-run advantage which the Valkyries negated with a solo-shot from sophomore Charley Swartzel.

Carson-Newman struck for six more runs across the final three innings and won 13-4.

On deck for the Valkyries
The Valkyries are back in action on March 3rd as they host the Lees-McRae College Bobcats at Tyger River Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2 P.M.
