Valkyries Split With Cobras in Sunday Showdown

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Converse University softball team split their Sunday doubleheader with the Coker University Cobras. The Valkyries took game one 8-3 before narrowly losing a 1-0 pitchers' duel to the Cobras.

Converse moves to 4-16 on the season, while Coker is now 6-8.

Freshman Tashi Fife earned her first career pitching win in game one, while fellow freshman Gracee Stucki earned her first career save.

Game One: Converse 8, Coker 3

Converse struck first with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. After senior Aubree Leonard was hit by a pitch and advanced on a walk to freshman Tyler Karabach, junior Kiarra Thomas reached to load the bases, and fellow junior Karlie Gibson's fielder's choice scored Leonard on a throwing error by the Coker shortstop.

Coker tied it in the second on a wild pitch that allowed a run to score.

The Valkyries erupted for four runs in the fifth to take control. Gibson delivered a key RBI single, sophomore Charley Swartzel added an RBI single, and graduate student Megan Monk drove in another with a groundout as part of the frame that chased Coker's starter from the circle.

Gibson provided the decisive blow in the sixth, crushing a three-run home run to left that scored junior Madison Davis and Karabach, pushing the lead to 8-2.

Coker added a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single, but Stucki retired the side in the seventh to seal the victory.

Game Two: Coker 1, Converse 0

Coker scored the game's lone run in the third inning with an RBI double to left-center.

Converse managed four hits, all singles except for Swartzel's double. Junior Alexis Felker, Monk, and sophomore Olivia Jones each added a single, but the Valkyries could not push across a run.

Stucki (3-8) took the loss for Converse, allowing one earned run on six hits over five innings with six strikeouts and two walks.
