Valkyries Cap First-Ever Converse Round Robin With Run-Rule Victory Over Broncos

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University softball team hosted a pair of Tar-Heel-State foes as the Mars Hill Lions and Fayetteville State Broncos came to the Hub City for six total games across Saturday and Sunday.

The Valkyries ended the weekend with a victory over the Broncos 15-7 in five innings on Sunday. Fayetteville State topped Converse 4-2 on Saturday and Mars Hill defeated the Valkyries in both games, winning 9-2 on Saturday and 12-3 on Sunday.

Game One: Fayetteville State 4, Converse 2 (8 Inn.)

While the Broncos recorded the first hit of the game , it was Converse that struck first as freshman Alexis Felker hit a one-out solo shot to center field in the bottom of the second inning.'

The scoring silenced until the top of the sixth inning when two lead-off singles came around to score for the Broncos.

The Broncos scratched across two runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Valkyries were scoreless in the bottom of the sixth despite a hit and the Broncos went down in order to put the Valkyries in a must-score situation in the bottom of the seventh.

Freshman Eryn Wright drove in the game-tying run with a one-out bases-loaded hit by pitch.

Fayetteville State scored in the top of the eighth and won the game 4-2.

Game Two: Mars Hill 9, Converse 2

Mars Hill opened the game with three runs in the top of the first but Converse cut the lead to just one run as a lead-off walk came around to score on a single from junior Madison Davis. Davis came around to score as fellow junior Ava Wells hit a two-out single of her own into left field.

The Lions doubled the lead with a run in the top of the second before the game went quiet until the sixth inning when Mars Hill scored five runs. They went on to win 9-2.

Game Three: Mars Hill 12, Converse 3

After winning a neutral site game to open the day, Mars Hill again scored first against the Valkyries in the top of the first.

Senior Aubree Leonard, who led off for the Valkyries with a hit by pitch, came around to score as junior Kiarra Thomas hit a one-out single down the first-base line in the bottom of the first inning.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the fourth inning when Thomas hit a lead-off home run to put Converse up 2-1.

Mars Hill scored nine runs in the top of the sixth inning. Converse responded by turning a lead-off single from Addie Branen into a run on the next at-bat as Leonard doubled into left-center field.

Mars Hill added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning and won 12-3.

Game Four: Converse 15, Fayetteville State 7 (5 Inn.)

The Valkyries opened up the scoring as back-to-back home runs from freshman Tyler Karabach and Thomas brought around Leonard, who hit a lead-off single, to score. Fayetteville State opened the top of the second inning with a lead-off single of their own who scored on the next at-bat, a home run into right-center field.

Junior Madison Davis scratched back those two runs with a one-out home run into center field, putting Converse up 5-2. A three-run home run from the Broncos in the top of the fourth tied the game 5-5.
