Criner and Berry Score As Valkyries Defeat Tornado

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Goals in both halves of their Tuesday night matchup with the King University Tornado (3-5-3, 3-4-2 Conference Carolinas) helped push the Converse University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Weisiger Stadium.

Freshman Sofía Casares Herrasti played 76 and a half minutes and earned the goalkeeping win. She allowed one goal. Fellow freshman Reese Haynes played the rest of the game and recorded two saves.

Converse held King to just one shot in the first half while taking eight of their own. The Valkyries took eight more shots in the second half but allowed 12 to the Tornado in the second half. The Valkyries held the edge in shots on goal 8-3.

Junior Sierra Criner scored the Valkyries' first goal late in the 19th minute with an assist from senior midfielder Emily Vargas. They took the one-goal lead into halftime.

Junior defender Brianna Berry doubled the lead in the 60th minute by delivering a shot to the top left corner of the net, just out of reach of the Tornado's keeper.

Despite a King goal in the 77th minute, Converse held on to win 2-1.

Next up for the Valkyries:
The Valkyries return to action on Saturday, Oct. 10, as they head to Banner Elk, North Carolina, to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats. The game is set to begin at 1 P.M.
