SPARTANBURG, S.C. – An early-second-half goal from sophomore
Kathryn Hoffman wasn't quite enough for the Converse University women's soccer team (3-5-5, 3-4-3 Conference Carolinas) as the Carson-Newman Eagles (6-3-5, 3-2-2 South Atlantic Conference) netted an 89th-minute equalizer to force a 1-1 draw on Wednesday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium in the teams' nonconference finale.
The Eagles held a 28-3 advantage in shots taken and a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal. It is the second consecutive game the Valkyries have tied while taking fewer than nine times the number of shots as their opponent. Converse drew with Lees-McRae 0-0 on Sunday while the Bobcats held a 19-2 shooting advantage.
Freshman goalkeeper Sofía Casares Herrasti recorded a new career high in saves with 11, breaking her short-standing record of 10 from Sunday.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Eagles hold a 14-1 shots advantage, Converse struck first as Hoffman netted the game's first goal, scoring directly from a free kick in the 59th minute, as the ball narrowly stayed inside the top right corner of the net.
Late in the game and early in the 89th minute, Carson-Newman scored off a free kick that mirrored Hoffman's, narrowly staying just inside the top left corner of the net.
The Eagles made a push in the final 90 seconds, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Next up for the Valkyries:
The Valkyries return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17, as they head to Due West to take on the Erskine Flying Fleet. The match is set for 1 P.M.
