Valkyries Drop Conference Contest to Barton

SPARTANBURG, S.C.    The Converse University women's basketball team fell to the Barton College Bulldogs by a final score of 90-62 Saturday afternoon at the Weisiger Center on the campus of Converse University.

With the loss, Converse falls to 1-16 on the season and 0-9 in conference play. Barton improves to 9-7 overall and 5-3 this season.

Senior Tatiana Brown led Converse in scoring with 18 points.

How It Happened
After forcing a turnover on the game's opening possession, Brown scored the game's first basket, putting Converse up early. After a three pointer from Barton, another two pointer from Brown put Converse back on top 4-3 just inside of eight minutes remaining in the first quarter. Barton scored 12 of the next 13 points over the next six minutes to go up 15-5 with 1:48 remaining in the first quarter. Senior Mazie Helpman scored the final five points of the quarter to cut the lead to five points, 15-10, heading into the second quarter.

Barton opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run and scored 10 of the first 13 points in the quarter. Following that opening run and between the 7:30 mark and the 3:30 mark, Barton added just two points to their lead, with an 11-9 run, with six of Converse's nine points coming from senior Emma Kanz. They added two more points to the lead with a three-and-a-half-minute 10-8 run and led by 16 points, 46-30, heading into halftime.

Freshman Madison Fileen and Brown combined for the first half points of the second half with all five coming within the first minute. Barton responded by scoring the game's next eight points and 12 of the game's next 17, taking the game through the six-minute mark in the third quarter. Converse netted just five more points over the final six minutes of the quarter as Barton led by 26 points, 71-45 heading into the fourth quarter.

Converse cut into the lead over the first three minutes of the final quarter, holding a slight 8-5 advantage over that time with five points from Helpman and three from freshman Skyler Ellison. Barton ended the game on a 14-9 run over the final seven minutes and won 90-62.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Brown led the Valkyries in scoring with 18 points. She shot 7-13, 53.8 percent, from the field and 2-3, 66.7 percent, from both three-point range and the charity stripe.
  • Helpman also tallied double-digit points with 10.
  • Helpman completed her double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds.
  • Fileen dished out a team-best seven assists, tying the team's individual single-game best this season. That mark was set by Fileen on Nov. 22 against Emmanuel.
  • Converse tied their season high in assists with 15.
