Valkyries Vanquish Cobras

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team defeated Coker 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Coker Athletic Field.
 
Converse improves to 2-0 overall on the season and remains 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference action since today's match was considered a non-conference matchup between the two squads. Coker falls to 0-1 overall on the season.
 
The Valkyries have now won eight straight games against the Cobras dating back to the 2021 season. Over their past two trips to Hartsville, the Valkyries have outscored the Cobras by a combined score of 10-2. Offensively, this is the best opening weekend in program history, with Converse outscoring opponents 14-1. The 2022 field hockey squad previously held the record, outscoring opponents 12-1 in the first two games of the season.
 
Converse struck first with less than five minutes to go in the opening quarter. Kilee Bradeen and Edith Swaan found Zelda Pretorius for her first career goal. The Valkyries outshot the Cobras 5-1 in the opening period and forced Coker to make a pair of saves in the period.
 
In the second quarter, Chelsy Bunse and Remington Lewis found Bradeen for the Valkyries second goals of the afternoon. Right at the halftime buzzer, Coker's Kelcie Gannon scored a corner to give the Cobras their first goal of the afternoon.
 
In the second half, the Valkyries offense came to life and put the game out of reach. Sage Pilarski and Bunse found Bradeen for her second goal of the afternoon and Converse held a 3-1 advantage. Moments later Amparo Figueroa scored her fifth goal of the season to put Converse ahead 4-1.
 
In the final quarter of action Remington Lewis scored her second goal of the season, Pilarski picked up her second assist of the day as freshman Sol Garcia Berro scored her first career goal for the Valkyries.

Next Up:
The Converse Field Hockey team will be back at Weisiger Stadium this coming Thursday for their home opener against Lander. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
