SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team fell to Lander University 3-1 on Thursday night at Weisiger Stadium.
With the loss, Converse drops to 2-1 overall on the season and 1-1 in South Atlantic Conference action. Meanwhile, Lander improves to 2-0 overall on the season and 1-0 in SAC play.
Lander struck first in the opening quarter as Leira Van Tilburg found Nienke Meima for the first goal of the game. With just over five minutes to play in the opening period of action,
Edith Swaan ripped a shot against the Bearcats goalie and
Amparo Figueroa fired the second chance shot into the cage to tie up the match.
With just over five minutes to play in the second quarter, Victoria Hulst ripped a shot from the top of the arch which was saved by Converse. However, the ball bounced back to Hulst who fired it into the back of the net to give Lander a 2-1 advantage in the opening half.
In the third quarter Meima scored her second goal of the evening off a corner attempt by the Bearcats. In the final period of action the Valkyries made one last attempt as they outshot the Bearcats 7-0 in the final period. However, the Valkyries seven corner attempts in the final period never found the back of the net as Converse picked up their first loss of the season.
