Eight Valkyries Net Goals As Women’s Soccer Sets New Scoring Record in Wylie’s First Career Victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's soccer team (1-0-1) scored early and often as they dominated their home opener against the Allen University Yellow Jackets (0-1) wire-to-wire, winning 19-0. It is head coach Colin Wylie's first career victory as a head coach.

The Valkyries' 19 goals are by far a team single-game record, breaking the 2002 team's record of 12 goals against William Peace. In total, eight different Valkyries netted at least one goal and six of those netted at least two goals. Junior forward Hannah Liebig led the way with four goals, one off from tying the program's single-game record for an individual. Junior midfielder McKenzie Bundy, senior midfielder Skylar Lund and sophomore forward Norah Greer all recorded hat tricks in the match.

Senior forward Jasmine Hernandez started the scoring for Converse just 30 seconds into the match, the second-fastest goal to open a match in program history. Senior Darrianne Henry netted her second goal of the game with just seven seconds remaining, the latest regulation goal in program history.

The Valkyries dominating offense shattered the program's previous record for shots in a game. Converse attempted 50 shots Saturday afternoon, 15 more than the previous record set against Chowan on Sept. 24, 2016, 36 of Saturday's shots were on-goal. The Valkyries also took 16 corner kicks, the second-most in program history, trailing only that same 2016 game against Chowan. By dominating the time of possession so heavily, Allen never attempted a shot in the game.

Freshman defender Kathryn Hoffman netted her first collegiate goal in the 65th minute and went on to score another in the 84th minute. Senior defender Sherlyn Avalos and Bundy both recorded their first goals in purple and gold in Saturday's victory.

The Valkyries goalkeepers, sophomore Gabriella Gudeman and freshman Julia Salo, combined for a shutout. It is the first time in programming history, dating back to 2002, that the Valkyries opened the season with back-to-back shutouts.

Scoring Summary: Up Next:
The Valkyries continue their five-game home stand by hosting USC Aiken at Weisiger Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 10. The match is set to begin at 5 P.M.
