Late Push Not Enough As Valkyries Fall to USC Aiken

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's soccer team (1-1-1) dropped their non-conference matchup to the USC Aiken Pacers (2-1) Wednesday evening at Weisiger Stadium by a final score of 2-1.

The Valkyries narrowly held a 13-11 advantage in shots, but the Pacers landed more shots on target, 7-4. Sophomore goalkeeper Gabriella Gudeman recorded five saves in the game.

The Pacers struck first with a goal in the 13th minute and held onto that lead until halftime. The Valkyries did not go down without a fight in the first half. Converse outshot the Pacers 7-3 in the opening 45 minutes but were unable to capitalize on any of those opportunities.

USC Aiken struck again in the 57th minute. It was just over four minutes later when junior forward Hannah Liebig netted her fifth goal of the season, cutting the lead to 2-1.

Liebig found herself in a one-on-one against the Pacers' goalkeeper in the 79th minute, but the shot bounced off the post. The Valkyries attempted two shots in the final 10 minutes of the match, but neither were on-target and the Pacers' 2-1 lead held.

The Valkyries continue their homestand as they host UNC Pembroke for a Conference Carolinas matchup on Saturday, Sept. 13. The match is set to begin at 1 P.M.
