Valkyries Sweep Opening Day Opponents

GREENEVILLE, TENN. – The Converse University volleyball team went 3-0 on Friday with wins over Edinboro, Auburn University Montgomery and Tusculum University. This is the second straight season the Valkyries have started 3-0. With today's wins, head coach Alexis Ivey passes Bill Rude to become the programs All-Time wins leader in the NCAA Era.  
 
 
Match One: Converse 3, Edinboro 2
  • The Valkyries opened up the season with a five set thriller against Edinboro on Friday morning.
  • Converse started the match on a 7-2 run and eventually held a 15-10 advantage over the Scots. The Scots used an 6-2 run to pull within a point at 17-16 just moments later against the Valkyries in the opening set.
  • Converse was unable to hold off the late surge by the Scots, as Edinboro ended the first period on a 9-3 run.
  • In the second set, the Valkyries once more raced out to a 7-3 lead over the Scots. Moments later the Valkyries used an 8-2 run to take a commanding 16-8 advantage over Edinboro.
  • The Scots stormed back with a 15-7 run against the Valkyries, but Converse stood strong and held on to win the second set 25-23.
  • In the third set the two teams went toe-to-toe through the first 12 points of the period. A three-point outburst from the Valkyries gave Converse a bit of breathing room at 9-6.
  • For the majority of the set the Valkyries were able to maintain a three advantage, a late rally by Converse but the Valkyries in a commanding lead up 22-16. Once again, the Valkyries held off a late run by Edinboro to win the third set 25-22.
  • In the fourth set Edinboro jumped out to a 14-7 advantage and never looked back as they coasted to a 25-15 set win.
  • In the fifth set Edinboro raced out to a 6-3 lead over Converse. The Valkyries stormed back with a 10-1 run and took a commanding 13-7 advantage over Edinboro. Converse held on to beat the Scots 15-10 in the final set.
  • Converse recorded 65 points, 54 kills, 6 aces, 5 blocks, 51 assists and 70 digs in the win.
  • Alysha Arroyo led the team with a double-double performance with 44 assists and 15 digs in the match. Bree Lyons led the team with 15 kills, while Ariel Bryant and Alayah Robertson were both second on the team with 12 kills each.
  • Noemia Chiacchio led the team with a trio of aces and 25 digs, while freshman Lilli Redifer finished with two service aces and nine digs. Ariana Bryant led the team with four blocks in the win.  
 
Match Two: Converse 3, Auburn University Montgomery 0
  • In the second match of the day the Valkyries took care of business and swept the Warhawks of Auburn University Montgomery. Converse hit over 300 in all three sets against the Warhawks and finished with a .345 hitting percentage.
  • Converse opened up the first set with a 6-2 run against AUM. The Warhawks countered and tied the match at eight. A few points later, another 4-0 spurt by the Valkyries offense had Converse out in front 14-10.
  • The Valkyries held a 16-12 lead over AUM but were unable to put the Warhawks away. AUM countered with a quick run and tied the opening set 18-18. Converse closed the first set on a 7-3 run and won the opening period 25-21.
  • In the second stanza the two teams were deadlocked through the first 20-points of the period. Converse finally broke through with a 5-1 spurt to take a 14-11 advantage over the Warhawks.
  • A few moments later Converse trailed 18-17 late in the second set, but once again the Valkyries finished strong with a 7-3 run to put the second period away. Converse won the second set 25-22 and held a 2-0 lead over AUM.
  • In the third set, AUM held the early 4-3 advantage over Converse. The lead was short lived, however, as the Valkyries used a 10-2 run to steal the momentum away from the Warhawks.
  • Converse closed out the third set on a 12-5 run and easily completed the sweep with a 25-11 third set score over AUM.
  • The Valkyries finished with 56 total points, 43 kills, 8 aces, 5 blocks, 41 assists and 35 digs.
  • Freshman Samiya Bolton led the team with a 10 kill performance, Bree Lyons finished second on the team with 8 kills and Megan Carpenter finished third on the team with 7 kills.
  • Alayah Robertson and Alysha Arroyo tied for the team lead in service aces with three each. Robertson led the team in blocks with four, while Arroyo led the team in assists for the second straight match with 22. Noemia Chiacchio once again led the Valkyries with 10 digs in the match.   
 
Match Three: Converse 3, Tusculum 1
  • In the final match of the day the Valkyries played against host Tusculum and held their own, picking up their first ever win against the Pioneers in the process.
  • Through the first 28 points of the opening set the two squads were deadlocked at 14. The Pioneers broke the stalemate with a quick 3-0 spurt, but it was all they needed to stay ahead of the Valkyries down the stretch. Tusculum won the opening set 25-21.
  • In the second set the Valkyries did not waste time, jumping out to a 7-4 advantage over the Pioneers. Tusculum countered with a quick run and trailed 12-11 midway through the stanza against the Valkyries.
  • Converse used an 8-2 run to steal the momentum away from the home crowd and the Pioneers. Despite a 20-13 advantage, the Valkyries let the Pioneers hang around and make it a competitive second set. Tusculum rallied back and were within a point at both 23-22 and 24-23. However, the Valkyries ended up winning the second set 25-23 to event the match at one set each.
  • In the third set, the two teams were tied once again through the first 20-points of the period. Converse made the first move with a 9-2 run and taking an 18-12 advantage over the Pioneers.
  • Tusculum countered with a 4-0 spurt to make it 18-16 in favor of Converse. The Valkyries countered with a 6-0 run of their own and took a late 24-16 lead over the Pioneers. Converse went up 2-1 in the match with a 25-18 third set win.
  • The fourth set was once again a tight back-and-forth stanza between the two squads. Knotted at 15 midway through the period, Converse used a 5-1 run to take a 20-16 edge over the Pioneers. Converse held on to win the fourth set 25-20 and secure their third win of the day.
  • Converse finished the match with 73 points, 60 kills, 7 aces, 6 blocks, 58 assists and 63 digs.
  • For the first time in recent memory, the Valkyries had five players finish with double-digit kills: Bree Lyons (15), Samiya Bolton (12), Megan Carpenter (11), Ariel Bryant (10) and Alayah Robertson (10).
  • Lyons finished the match with a .481 hitting percentage, while Carpenter was second on the team with a .417 hitting percentage.
  • Alysha Arroyo led the team with 26 assists in the match and Jayden Johnson finished second on the team with 21 assists. It was the first time since the Robert Wesleyan match last season that duo teamed up finish with 20 or more assists each.
  • Noemia Chiacchio led the team with 18 digs, while Alayah Robertson posted a team high four blocks against the Pioneers.    
 
Next Up:
Converse will be back in action next Friday against defending national champions Lynn in their home opener. The match is set to start at 6:00 p.m. inside the Weisiger Center.
