Valkyries Invitational Weekend Recap

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team went 1-1 this week with a loss to nationally ranked Lynn and a straight set sweep against Fayetteville State on Saturday afternoon.
 
At the conclusion of the weekend the Valkyries are now 4-1 overall on the season. This is the second straight season Converse has started the year 4-1.    
 
 
Match One: #1 Lynn 3, Converse 0
  • Converse came out ready to go in the opening set as they took a 6-2 lead against the defending national champions.
  • Lynn countered with a 6-2 run of their own to take back the lead at 8-7. Moments later the set was once again tied at 13, but a timely 5-0 run by Lynn gave the Fighting Knights a late advantage.
  • Converse rallied once more and used a 6-1 run to take a 21-20 lead over the Fighting Knights. However, Lynn closed out the opening set on a 5-2 run, taking the opening set by a final score of 25-23.
  • In the second set the two teams went back-and-forth trading points, Lynn held a 16-15 advantage midway through the period and used a 9-2 run to put the set away at 25-17.
  • In the third set the Fighting Knights raced out to an 18-8 advantage and went on to win the final set 25-14.
  • Converse tallied 39 points, 30 kills, 5 aces, 4 blocks, 25 assists and 42 digs against Lynn. Ariel Bryant led the team with 7 kills, while Alayah Robertson and Ella Ruckman both finished with six each.
  • Ariana Bryant led the team with a trio of assists, Alysha Arroyo finished first on the team with 11 assists and Lilli Redifer finished with a team high 10 digs.
 
Match Two: Converse 3, Fayetteville State 0
  • In the second match of the weekend the Valkyries came out ready to play as they raced out to a 10-4 advantage over the Broncos.
  • Converse kept Fayetteville State at a distance the rest of the opening set as they cruised to a 25-17 first period win.
  • In the second set the Valkyries opened up a 15-6 advantage over the Fayetteville State and cruised to a 25-15 second set win over the Broncos.
  • In the third set Fayetteville State went up 6-3 on the Valkyries before Converse countered with a 4-2 run of their own.
  • Trailing 10-7 midway through the third period, Converse used a 5-0 to steal back the lead and the momentum.
  • With the set deadlocked at 17, Converse used a timely 3-0 spurt to gain the late advantage over the Broncos. Converse went on to win the third and final set 25-23 over Fayetteville State.
  • Converse tallied 51 points, 34 kills, 10 aces, 7 blocks, 33 assists and 59 digs.
  • Ariel Bryant led the team with 12 kills, Samiya Bolton finished second on the team with 9 kills and Alayah Robertson added 8 kills in the win.
  • Bree Lyons had a season best five aces against the Broncos, while Robertson and Ariana Bryant led the team with three blocks each.
  • Alysha Arroyo led the team with 31 assists, while Noemia Chiacchio had 27 digs on the afternoon.  
 
Next Up:
Converse will open up Conference Carolinas action this coming Tuesday night against North Greenville. First Serve is set for 6:00 p.m. inside the Weisiger Center.
