SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team swept North Greenville 3-0 on Tuesday evening inside the Weisiger Center.
With the win the Valkyries improve to 5-1 overall on the season, 1-0 in Conference Carolinas action and 1-0 in Northwest Division play. Meanwhile, the Trailblazers drop to 2-5 overall on the year, 0-1 in Conference action and 0-1 in Northwest Division play. The Valkyries have now swept the Trailblazers three straight times dating back to last October.
In the opening set the two squads were tied at eight through the first 16 points of the period. North Greenville then made the first move, using a 5-2 run to take a 13-10 advantage over Converse. The Valkyries countered back with a 6-0 run and forced North Greenville to call a timeout trailing 16-13.
Moments later, the match was tied at 18 but once again the Valkyries stole the momentum and went up 22-20 on North Greenville. The Trailblazers rallied and held off a pair of set points for the Valkyries, but Converse maintained the status quo and eventually won the opening set 29-27.
In the second set the Valkyries fell behind 4-1 to the Trailblazers but Converse was not discouraged as they used a 6-1 run to take back the lead over North Greenville. Moments later the Valkyries were in complete control of the second set up 17-10. Converse went on to win the second set 25-17 over North Greenville.
In the third set the Valkyries raced out to a 6-3 advantage over the Trailblazers, but it was short lived as North Greenville countered with an 11-3 run against the Converse defense. Following a timeout by Converse, the Valkyries clawed their way back into the set two points at a time against the Trailblazers.
North Greenville held set point at 24-22 but the Valkyries fought back and tied the set at 24. With the match tied at 26 the Valkyries defense stood strong as they forced the Trailblazers to make a pair of hitting errors to close out the match at 28-26.
Converse finished with 54 points, 43 kills, 4 aces, 7 blocks, 40 assists and 63 digs.
Bree Lyons posted a double-double with 12 kills, 12 digs and a pair of aces.
Alayah Robertson finished second on the team with 11 kills and
Ella Ruckman finished third on the team with 10 kills. Robertson also led the team with five blocks on the evening.
Alysha Arroyo posted a team high 39 assists and
Noemia Chiacchio had a team best with 26 digs.

Converse will hit the road this weekend with matches against Francis Marion and Mount Olive on Friday and Saturday.
