MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Converse University volleyball team went 0-2 this past weekend with losses to Francis Marion and Mount Olive.
The Valkyries are now 5-3 overall and 1-2 in Conference Carolinas action. Meanwhile, Francis Marion improves to 3-6 overall and 2-0 in Conference Carolinas play, and Mount Olive is now 3-6 overall and 2-1in conference action.
Match One: Francis Marion 3, Converse 2
- Entering Friday nights matchup against the Patriots, Converse was 36-1 when leading by at least two sets in the Alexis Ivey era. Prior to Friday night the Valkyries last loss when leading by two sets happened at King on November 3, 2023.
- In the opening set of action, the Patriots raced out to a 10-4 lead over Converse. A few moments later the Valkyries countered with a 6-0 run against Francis Marion and held a 14-12 advantage over the Patriots.
- The two teams were deadlocked at 21 in the final moments of the opening set, Francis Marion closed out the first period on a 4-2 run against the Valkyries.
- In the second set, Converse once again found themselves down early. This time, Francis Marion opened up the set on a 7-2 run against Converse. Slowly the Valkyries clawed their way back into the set, trailing 19-17 Converse made their move. The Valkyries closed out the second set on an 8-2 run to tie the match at one set each.
- In the third set, Converse opened up a 7-3 advantage over Francis Marion. The Valkyries kept their distance against the Patriots and cruised to a third set 25-21 win.
- In the fourth set, Converse found themselves down 7-3 against Francis Marion. Trailing 22-15 the Valkyries made a late charge with a 5-0 run to pull within a pair of points of the Patriots. It was too little to late as Converse lost the fourth set 25-22 against Francis Marion.
- In the final period of action, Converse held the early advantage at 6-4 and 7-5 against Francis Marion. Then the Patriots used a 5-0 run to take an 11-8 advantage over the Valkyries. Francis Marion went on to win the final set 15-10 over Converse.
- Converse tallied 78 points, 67 kills, 7 aces, 4 blocks, 60 assists and 76 digs in the loss to Francis Marion.
- For the second time this season the Valkyries had five players finish the match with double-figure kills. Bree Lyons led the way with 17 kills, Ella Ruckman was second on the team with 13 kills, Alayah Robertson finished third on the team with 11 kills, while Ariel Bryant and Megan Carpenter both had 10 kills in the loss.
- Alysha Arroyo finished with a double-double following a 35 assist and 11 dig performance on Friday evening. Noemia Chiacchio finished with a team best 22 digs, while Lilli Redifer finished second on the team with 15 digs.
Match Two: Mount Olive 3, Converse 0
- With the loss to Mount Olive on Saturday afternoon the Valkyries drop back-to-back matches for the first time this season. This is the Valkyries longest losing streak since they lost 3 straight last November against Lander, Mount Olive and Emmanuel.
- In the opening set the two squads were deadlocked at nine through the first 18 points of the set. A few moments later, Converse made the first big rally of the set and won four straight points to take a 13-11 advantage over the Trojans.
- Mount Olive then countered the early run and the two squads went point-for-point with one another over the next several points of game action. Mount Olive led 19-18 late in the period and they put the set out of reach with a 4-0 run against the Valkyries. Converse was unable to counter the Trojan attack as they lost the opening set 25-22.
- In the second set the two teams were once again dead even through the first 16 points of the set. Once again, the Trojans used a late rally to put pressure on the Valkyries offense trailing 20-16.
- Converse once again continued to rally and fight back with a 4-1 spurt of their own. Still trailing 21-20 the Valkyries continued to put pressure on the Trojan defense. A few moments later the Valkyries saved a set point down 24-22 and forced extra volleyball after tying the set at 24. Unfortunately, the Valkyries luck ran out as Mount Olive took the second set 26-24.
- In the third set, Converse found themselves down 12-6 and a few minutes later the Valkyries trailed 20-10 against Mount Olive. The Trojans went on to win the final set 25-18 to complete the sweep against the Valkyries.
- Converse tallied 49 points, 37 kills, 7 aces, 5 blocks, 28 assists and 47 digs. Alayah Robertson led the team with 10 kills, Ariel Bryant finished second on the team with 7 kills and Bree Lyons finished third on the team with 6 kills.
- Ava Trentman led the team with four blocks on the afternoon, Jayden Johnson had a team high 12 assists and Alysha Arroyo was second on the team with 9 assists. Noemia Chiacchio led the team with 13 digs and Lilli Redifer finished second on the team with 10 digs.

The Converse volleyball team will stay on the road this week with a midweek matchup against Anderson on Tuesday evening.
