ANDERSON, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team fell 3-1 to Anderson on Tuesday night inside the Abney Athletic Center on the campus of Anderson University.
With the loss the Valkyries are now 5-4 overall and they have lost the last three matches dating back to Friday evening. Meanwhile, the Trojans improve to 5-4 overall on the season and they are now 3-0 against Conference Carolina teams.
In the opening set the Valkyries fell behind 10-5 to Anderson before rallying to make it a 10-9 deficit. Converse kept it close for a few points, before Anderson used a 9-4 run to take a commanding 20-13 advantage over Converse. The Valkyries attempted a late rally but came up short as Anderson took the opening set 25-19.
In the second set, the Valkyries once again fell behind 15-8 early in the period. Converse never gave up as they slowly chipped away at the Trojans lead. Then trailing 21-17 the Valkyries made a late push with a 5-0 rally, stealing a 22-21 advantage over Anderson. The Trojans countered with a 3-0 spurt and held set point at 24-22, however, the Valkyries rallied and won the last four points of the period to take the second set 26-24.
Coming off an electric second set, the Valkyries came out ready to go in the third set. Converse raced bolted out to an 11-6 advantage over Anderson to start the period. For the majority of the set it was Converse fending off the Trojan offensive attack. Late in the frame, Converse held a 20-18 lead over Anderson, the Trojans won the next five points to take a 23-20 momentum shifting advantage over Converse. Anderson went on to win the third set 25-21.
In the fourth set, Anderson jumped out to a 7-3 advantage over Converse before the Valkyries rallied to pull back within a point of the Trojans at 7-6. A few moments later and the Trojans had all the momentum up 16-8 over Converse. The Valkyries attempted a few rallies late but they fell short, losing the final set 25-19 to the Trojans.
Converse tallied 62 points, 51 kills, 5 aces, 6 blocks, 48 assists and 51 digs.
Ariel Bryant led the team with a season high 16 kills,
Alayah Robertson finished second on the team with 15 kills and
Samiya Bolton finished with 9 kills.
Ariana Bryant led the team with a trio of blocks,
Alysha Arroyo finished with a team best 47 assists, and Noemia Chiachhio finished with a team high 17 digs.
Lilli Redifer led the team with two service aces and
Landon Garbade finished second on the team with 12 digs.
