Novik’s First-Half Goal Leads Valkyries To First Conference Victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Squaring off with their fourth in-state foe of the season, the Converse University women's soccer team (2-2-2, 1-1-1 Conference Carolinas) took an early lead and never let go as they defeated the Southern Wesleyan Warriors (0-4, 0-2 Conference Carolinas) 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.

The Valkyries outpaced the Warriors 5-6 in shots in the first half and 12-6 in the second half. Thirteen of the Valkyries shots were on-goal while only six of Southern Wesleyan's were.

Sophomore goalkeeper Gabriella Gudeman recorded six saves in the game as she completed her ninth career solo shutout.

Senior Samantha Novik started and ended the game's scoring in the 19th minute as she caught the Warrior's defense sleeping, dribbling straight pass four blue jerseys en route to her first goal of the season and her first goal in purple and gold.

The Valkyries brought an onslaught in the second half, doubling the Warriors' shot total for the final 45 minutes and putting 10 of their 12 shots on-target.
