SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior defender Luis Fortuce netted an 87th minute go-ahead goal for the Converse University men's soccer team (2-2, 2-0 Conference Carolinas) as the Valkyries defeated the Lees-McRae Bobcats (0-3-2, 0-2 Conference Carolinas) 3-2 Wednesday evening at Weisiger Stadium.

The Valkyries got the scoring going just under halfway through the first half when freshman Jacob Bandel netted his second goal of the season into the bottom right portion of the net. Neither team scored again for the rest of the half as the Valkyries took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Just over six minutes into the second half, Lees-McRae found their first equalizer after a free kick just outside the Valkyries' box.

It would take the Valkyries about 16 minutes for senior forward Guilherme Fontes to net his first goal of the 2025 campaign, putting Converse up for the second time in the match, 2-1.

With exactly six minutes remaining in the contest, Lees-McRae again found an equalizer.

Down on time, the Valkyries relentless attack forced a corner with just over three minutes remaining. Freshman Jesper Schierholz took the corner and found Fortuce, who put the ball in the back of the net, putting Converse up 3-2 late. The Bobcats never made a serious push after that and the Valkyries secured the divisional victory.

The Valkyries continue Conference Carolinas action as they host the Southern Wesleyan Warriors on Saturday, Sept. 20. The match is set to begin at 2:30 P.M.
