YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Behind a six-RBI game from senior
Sydney Watson, the Converse University softball team (16-24, 8-8 Conference Carolinas) won game one of their first-ever doubleheader with the Young Harris Mountain Lions (17-21, 8-10 Conference Carolinas) by a final score of 7-5. The Mountain Lions won game two 9-1 in five innings.
Watson hit two home runs in game one, just the fifth time in program history and third time this season that a Valkyrie has had a multi-home-run game.
Senior Riley Lingerfelt earned the win in game one. She tossed a complete game, her 12th of the season. Freshman pitcher CJ McBride started game two in the circle and tossed two innings.
Game One: Converse 7, Young Harris 5
After senior AJ Albano reached with a one out-single in the first inning, Watson knocked one over the left field fence to score the Valkyries first two runs of the game.
The Valkyries held the Mountain Lions scoreless in the first and neither team plated a run in the second inning. Converse scored three in the third inning, all coming on Watson's second mult-run home run of the game. A two-out home run for Young Harris in the bottom of the inning cut the lead to three runs by inning's end.
Sophomore Madison Davis got in on the home-run action with a one-out solo shot in the top of the fourth inning. The Mountain Lions hit one of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Watson drove in her sixth run of the game in the top of the seventh inning with a two-out single. Despite Young Harris picking up two runs in the bottom of the inning, Converse held on to win 7-5.
Game Two: Young Harris 9, Converse 1 (5 Innings)
The Mountain Lions built a five-run lead by the fourth inning when Converse scored their first and only run of the game. With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, freshman Olivia Jones singled, scoring fellow freshman Charley Swartzel from second base.
The Mountain Lions scored two runs in the bottom of both the fourth and fifth innings and won the game via run rule 9-1.
On deck for the Valkyries:
After six consecutive games on the road, the Valkyries return home for six consecutive games at Tyger River Stadium. The Valkyries first host divisional-foe King on Tuesday, April 8. Converse then wraps up the season series with Lees-McRae on Saturday, April 12, as they celebrate senior day. The Valkyries conclude their 2025 home slate with No. 4 Francis Marion on Sunday, April 13.
