Tornado Defeats Valkyries on Tuesday Afternoon

SPARTANBRUG, S.C.  – The Converse University softball team (16-26, 8-10 Conference Carolinas) dropped both games of their Tuesday afternoon divisional doubleheader to the King University Tornado (26-18, 13-7 Conference Carolinas). King won game one 15-3 in five innings and game two 6-3.

Senior Riley Lingerfelt was credited with both losses in the circle. She threw three innings in game one and allowed four runs on five hits. She threw all seven innings in game two and struck out 10 batters.

Freshman Charley Swartzel led the Valkyries offensively with three RBIs, all coming in game two. Graduate student Megan Monk had two RBIs on the day, both coming in game one.

Game One: King 15, Converse 3 (5 Innings)

The Tornado had built a 2-0 lead by the time they scored 11 runs in the top of the fourth inning.

The Valkyries picked up three runs as Monk drove in two with a single down the left field line and sophomore Madison Davis drove home the other.

King picked up two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Valkyries got two runners on base in the bottom of the inning but a double play ended the game with King securing the 15-3 win.

Game Two: King 6, Converse 3

King struck first in the top of the first inning on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the third inning, Converse claimed their first lead of the day as Swartzel hit a one-out, three-run home run over the left field fence.

The game was scoreless through the fourth and fifth innings before King tied the game in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out, two-RBI single into right field.

King took a three-run lead in the top of the seventh on a two-out, three-run home run of their own. The Valkyries went down in order in the bottom of the inning as King won 6-3.

On deck for the Valkyries:
The Valkyries wrap up the season series with Lees-McRae on Saturday, April 12, as they celebrate senior day. The Valkyries conclude their 2025 home slate with No. 4 Francis Marion on Sunday, April 13.
