Valkyries Bested by Trojans on Saturday Afternoon

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – The Converse University softball team (13-21, 5-5 Conference Carolinas) faced one of their toughest conference tests of the season Saturday afternoon as they hosted the Mount Olive Trojans (21-13, 11-3 Conference Carolinas) at Tyger River Park. The Trojans won both games, taking game one by final score of 3-0 and winning game two 10-4.

Senior Riley Lingerfelt received the loss in game one for 4.1 innings in the circle. She allowed all three runs scored in the game. Freshman CJ McBride received the loss in game two. She pitched 4.2 innings and allowed nine runs, only five of which were earned. She struck out a trio of batters.

Game One: Mount Olive 3, Converse 0

Senior Sydney Watson knocked the game's first hit with a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the first.

The Valkyries collected one hit in both the second and third innings.

Back-to-back no-out singles gave Mount Olive a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. They added their third and final run on a one-out home run in the fifth inning.

Junior Aubree Leonard singled up the middle with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, loading the bases, but the Valkyries were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

The Valkyries hit two two-out singles in the bottom of the seventh inning, but again did not score as Mount Olive won 3-0.

Game Two: Mount Olive 10, Converse 4

The Trojans struck first with two unearned runs in the top of the first inning.

Freshman Charley Swartzel singled down the left field line with two outs in the bottom of the first, bringing home the Valkyries' first run of the day.

Mount Olive struck for three runs in the top of the second inning. Converse added three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Leonard drove in the first run and Watson drove in the other two with a double into right field. The Valkyries trailed by one run, 5-4, heading into the third inning.

Converse collected one hit in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. The Valkyries had two hits in the sixth inning but were unable to score. The Trojans added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and a single run in the seventh inning to win 10-4.

On deck for the Valkyries:

The Valkyries play their next six games on the road. They first make a return trip to Tigerville on Tuesday, April 1, to take on divisional-foe North Greenville for the second time this season. The Valkyries then travel to Due West for a twinbill with Erskine on Friday, April 4, before wrapping up the road trip with games against the Young Harris Mountain Lions on Saturday April 5.

The Valkyries return home to Tyger River Stadium on Tuesday, April 8, as they host the King University Tornado. First pitch against King is scheduled for 2 P.M.
