Four-Run First Not Enough For Valkyries Against King

BRISTOL, TENN.  – The Converse University softball team (13-19, 5-3 Conference Carolinas) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one of their doubleheader with the King University Tornado (21-11, 8-0 Conference Carolinas) but ultimately fell 5-4 at the King Softball Field. The Tornado won 8-0 in six innings in game two. 

Senior Riley Lingerfelt tossed five innings and allowed two runs while striking out two batters. She received no decision. Freshman CJ McBride suffered the loss for one inning of relief work in which she allowed three runs, two of which were earned. Game two's loss went to sophomore Madison Davis who allowed five runs, two of which were earned, in 1.2 innings pitched. McBride and Davis struck out one batter each.

Game One: King 5, Converse 4

A throwing error by the Tornado's pitcher brought home the first run of the game as freshman Charley Swartzel picked up the RBI. Junior Jaydin Gentile hit a two-out RBI single to put Converse up 2-0. Sophomore Kiarra Thomas doubled the lead with a single through the left side of the infield.

The Valkyries held the Tornado scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when they struck for two runs.

Although King threatened to score in the sixth inning, it wasn't until the seventh inning when they did so again. With the lead-off batter getting on via an error and following it up with two singles, King walked the game off 5-4.

Game Two: King 8, Converse 0 (6 Innings)

Converse collected two hits in the top of the first inning but were unable to bring the runs around to score. King plated two in the bottom of the opening frame.

The Tornado added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning.

The Valkyries had one hit each in the fifth and sixth innings. Three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning gave King a run-rule 8-0 victory.

The Valkyries return home to Tyger River Stadium on Saturday, March 29 as they host the University of Mount Olive Trojans. First pitch is scheduled for 1 P.M.
