McBride Earns First Collegiate Win as Valkyries Split With Coker

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – Freshman pitcher CJ McBride was all smiles as she collected her first collegiate pitching win with a 3-2 victory over the Coker Cobras (7-9) in game one of the Converse University softball team's (5-15) doubleheader with the Cobras Tuesday afternoon at Tyger River Stadium. The Cobras won game two 16-1 in five innings.

McBride tossed six innings in game one. She struckout a pair of Cobras. Senior pitcher Riley Lingerfelt earned the save from one inning of work. She struck out two batters as well.

Game One: Converse 3, Coker 2

Coker struck first in the top of the second inning with a two out double, but a strikeout from McBride left two runners stranded.

Sophomore Kiarra Thomas and junior Aubree Leonard brought home two runners, giving Converse their first lead of the day.

A one-out single for Coker came around to score for Coker in the top of the sixth inning, but Converse regained the lead as freshman Olivia Jones scored on a beautiful piece of baserunning following a sacrifice fly from junior Katelynn Tuxbury.

Lingerfelt closed the door on Coker with a 1-2-3 inning and secured the 3-2 victory for Converse.

Game Two: Coker 16, Converse 1 (5 Innings)

Coker scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Sydney Watson cut the lead in half with a one-out RBI single into left field.
