Valkyries Return Home Victorious From Orangeburg

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – Behind 15 hits and two complete-game performances, the Converse University softball team (7-15) won both games of their Saturday doubleheader with the Claflin Panthers (6-12). The Valkyries won the first game 7-2 and the second game 8-2.

Senior pitcher Riley Lingerfelt tossed all seven innings of game one and walked just one batter while striking out 11. Freshman CJ McBride pitched the full seven innings of game two and struck out seven batters. Both pitchers allowed just two runs, both earned, each.

Game One: Converse 7, Claflin 2

Converse struck first in the top of the second inning with three runs. With the bases loaded and just one out sophomore Kiarra Thomas cleared the bases with a double into left field.

Fellow sophomore Angela Tucker added another run in the fourth inning when scored on a wild pitch after hitting a two-out triple. Claflin managed one run in the bottom of that inning.

A two-out RBI double in the sixth inning gave the Panthers their second run of the game. In the top of the seventh, Converse added three more runs to their tally. Senior Sydney Watson hit a one-out RBI single into left field. Then with two outs and two in scoring position, junior Jaydin Gentile brought home both runners with a single into right field.

The Panthers went down in order to finish the game with Converse securing the 7-2 victory.

Game Two: Converse 8, Claflin 2

Claflin struck first in game two with both of their runs coming in the bottom of the first inning.

After freshman Olivia Jones hit a leadoff triple in the second inning, sophomore Ava Wells brought her home with a sacrifice fly, cutting the Panthers' lead in half.

Wells pushed the Valkyries ahead in the top of the fourth inning with a one-out, two-RBI double. Converse plated another run as the batter following Wells reached on an error.

With two outs in the fifth inning, Jones brought home one run via a single through the left side of the infield. Junior Cara Willis kept the hits coming for the Valkyries two batters later with a three-RBI triple into center field, bringing the game to its final score of 8-2.

The Valkyries threatened in the seventh inning, but couldn't push their ninth run across the plate.

On deck for the Valkyries:

The Valkyries finally return home to Tyger River Stadium on Wednesday, March 12 as Conference Carolinas play begins with a doubleheader against Belmont Abbey. First pitch is scheduled for 3 P.M.
