ROME, Ga. – The Converse University volleyball team picked up their 20
th win of the season on Saturday afternoon, as they defeated Shorter 3-0 inside the Winthrop-King Centre.
With the win Converse is now 20-7 overall on the season and 15-4 in Conference Carolinas action. This is the second season in a row the Valkyries have won at least 20 matches. Meanwhile, Shorter drops to 14-13 overall and 11-8 in Conference Carolinas play.
The Valkyries came out ready to go in the opening set, jumping out to an 8-2 advantage over the Hawks. Converse continued to build on their early momentum and eventually held an 18-8 edge over Shorter.
The Hawks did not go down quietly in the opening set, as they countered the Valkyries early offense with a late 10-2 rally. Holding a slim 20-18 advantage over Shorter, Converse used a 4-0 run to get to set point against the Hawks. Shorter held off the first set point, but an assisted block by
Ariana Bryant and
Alysha Arroyo ended the set with a Converse win.
Converse once again opened up the second set on an 8-3 run against Shorter. The Valkyries once again built a large lead and midway through the set held a 16-8 advantage over the Hawks. Converse never let Shorter get close in the second set, holding late leads of 21-12 and 25-15 against the Hawks.
In the third set, Shorter was the aggressive team early on holding a 10-4 advantage over Converse. The Valkyries never panicked as they slowly and methodically chipped away at the Hawks lead. Trailing 21-19 Converse made the final move of the set, an
Alayah Robertson kill jump started a 6-0 run by the Valkyries. Shorter ended the set with three errors, including a pair of setting errors, allowing Converse to comeback and pick up a 25-21 third set win.
Converse finished with 50 points, 39 kills, 7 aces, 4 blocks, 35 assists and 53 digs.
Bree Lyons led the team with 17 kills,
Ariel Bryant finished second on the team with 8 kills and
Alayah Robertson finished third on the team with 7 kills.
Robertson led the team with three service aces and tied for the team lead alongside
Ariana Bryant with two blocks each.
Alysha Arroyo led the team with 30 assists on the afternoon and
Noemia Chiacchio had a team best 19 digs.

Converse will return home for their final regular season game on Tuesday evening against Young Harris. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. inside the Weisiger Center.
