Valkyries Sweep Warriors In Midweek Matchup

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –  The Converse Volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday night inside the Weisiger Center.

With the win the Valkyries improved to 10-5 overall on the season and 6-2 in Conference Carolinas action. This is the Valkyries third straight season with at least 10 wins, their longest stretch in the NCAA era. With the loss, Southern Wesleyan drops to 6-6 overall and 4-4 in Conference Carolinas play.

Converse opened the first set on a 10-6 run against the Warriors and a few moments later the Valkyries held a 17-9 advantage. Converse finished the opening set on an 8-3 run and took the first with a final score of 25-12.

In the second set, Southern Wesleyan opened the period on an 8-1 run and forced Converse to use an early timeout. Despite trailing 10-3, the Valkyries started to chip away at the Warriors lead and used a 5-0 run to pull within a pair of Southern Wesleyan. The Warriors continued to hold off the Valkyries offensive attempts, but a 10-2 run by the Valkyries offense had Converse back on top up 20-16. Converse won the second set by a final score of 25-19 over the Warriors.

Converse came out ready to go in the third set and used a 12-2 run to take a commanding lead over Southern Wesleyan. The Warriors slowly chipped away at the Valkyries advantage and eventually pulled within a trio of points at 18-15. Converse continued to put the pressure on Southern Wesleyan and held a 24-18 lead moments later. Southern Wesleyan held off two match points before Ava Trentman sealed the match with a kill.

Converse finished 55 points, 46 kills, 5 aces, 4 blocks, 42 assists and 56 digs. Alayah Robertson led the team with 13 kills, Bree Lyons finished second on the team with 12 kills and Ariel Bryant finished third on the team with 9 kills. Alysha Arroyo led the team with 38 assists and Noemia Chiacchio finished first on the team with 20 digs.

Next Up:
The Converse volleyball team will be back at home this Friday night when they battle Lees-McRae at 6:00 p.m. inside the Weisiger Center.
