SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse Volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over Lees-McRae on Friday night inside the Weisiger Center.
The Valkyries have now won three straight matches via sweep, a sweep on Saturday would tie the program record for consecutive sweeps in program history. Last season, the Valkyries won four matches via sweep from September 14-25
th. Prior to last season, the Valkyries first accomplished the feat of four straight matches and 12 straight sets was in 2006.
Going back to last Friday evenings win over Belmont Abbey the Valkyries have now won 11 straight sets. A sweep tomorrow afternoon against Young Harris would give the Valkyries a program record for consecutive sets won and tie the program record for consecutive sweeps.
With the win on Friday night, the Valkyries improve to 11-5 overall and 7-2 in Conference Carolinas play. Converse is now 5-0 in the Conference Carolinas Northwest Division as they maintain their hold over first in the division. Lees-McRae falls to 4-12 overall and 4-5 in Conference Carolinas play. The Bobcats are now tied with King University with a 1-3 record in the Northwest Division standings. Converse has now won four straight against Lees-McRae and completed the season sweep over the Bobcats for the second consecutive school year.
Converse started the first set on a 5-2 run and then allowed Lees-McRae to tie the set at six all a few moments later. The tie did not last long as the Valkyries regained momentum and built a 17-10 advantage over the Bobcats. Lees-McRae rallied late but Converse held off the attack and won the first set 25-18.
In the second set, Converse once again raced out to a strong start and opened the period on an 8-2 run against the Bobcats. Converse once again allowed Lees-McRae to use a rally to pull within a few points of the Valkyries at 13-11. Converse regained their focus and rallied to build a 23-12 advantage over Lees-McRae. The Valkyries went on to win the second set 25-13 over the Bobcats.
In the third set, the Valkyries once again raced out to a 5-2 advantage over the Bobcats. However, this time Lees-McRae stayed within striking distance of the Valkyries, trailing 13-10 midway through the period. Another timely run allowed Converse to build a 21-13 advantage over Lees-McRae. Despite a late run by the Bobcats, Converse held on to win the final set by a score of 25-20.
Converse finished with 49 points, 41kills, six aces, two blocks, 36 assists and 58 digs.
Bree Lyons led the team with 17 kills,
Ava Trentman finished second on the team with 7 kills and
Alayah Robertson finished third on the team with six kills.
Alysha Arroyo had a team best 33 assists and Noemia Chacchio had a team high 20 digs in the win over Lees-McRae.
