SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team went 2-0 this weekend with conference wins over Belmont Abbey and Ferrum.
The Valkyries improve to 9-5 overall on the season and 5-2 in Conference Carolinas play. With their win over Belmont Abbey on Friday evening the Valkyries improve to 4-0 in the Northwest Division standings.
Match One: Converse 3, Belmont Abbey 2
- In the opening set the Valkyries fell behind 6-1 to the Crusaders, but Converse countered with an 8-0 run against Belmont Abbey.
- For the remainder of the opening set the two teams went back-and-forth. Late in the period, Converse led 18-17 and finished the period on a 7-2 run against the Crusaders.
- In the second set the two squads were tied through the first 18 points of the period. Belmont Abbey made the first move with an 9-4 run to take a 18-13 lead over the Valkyries.
- The Valkyries countered with a late run of their own and pull within a pair down 19-17. Converse was unable to complete the comeback and dropped the second set 25-21.
- Converse opened the third set on a 5-2 run against the Crusaders, slowly Belmont Abbey countered and chipped away at the Valkyries lead. With the set tied at 11 the Crusaders made their move against the Valkyries. Belmont Abbey used a 6-2 run taking a commanding 17-13 advantage over Converse.
- The Valkyries made a late attempt at a rally but came up short, falling 25-22 to the Crusaders in the third set.
- In the fourth set the two teams were even through the first 16 points of the period. Then Converse started to make their move against the Crusaders. Quickly the Valkyries were in control up 19-14 over Belmont Abbey. Converse forced a fifth by winning the fourth 25-20.
- In the final set the Valkyries jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Belmont Abbey. The Crusaders eventually chipped away at the Valkyries lead and tied the match at nine.
- With the set tied at 12 the Valkyries dug deep and won the final three points off kills from Ariel Bryant and Ella Ruckman.
- Converse finished with 80 points, 59 kills, 9 aces, 12 blocks, 52 assists and 71 digs. Bree Lyons posted a double-double with 13 kills and 17 digs in the match. Ariel Bryant was second on the team with 12 kills, while Alayah Robertson and Ava Trentman were third on the team with 11 kills each.
- Trentman led the team with seven blocks on the evening, Alysha Arroyo had a team best 48 assists and Noemia Chiaccio led the team with 28 digs.
Match Two: Converse 3, Ferrum 0
- Converse dominated from start to finish on Saturday afternoon as they took care of business against Ferrum.
- In the opening set the Valkyries jumped out to a 10-5 advantage over Ferrum. The Panthers bounced back and attempted a quick comeback trailing 14-12 just moments later against the Valkyries.
- Converse kept their foot on the gas pedal and ended the set on a 9-2 run.
- In the second set the Valkyries opened up the period on a 10-3 run against Ferrum. The Valkyries eventually held a 20-7 lead and went on to win the second set 25-11.
- Converse opened the third set on a 14-4 run and ran away with the third set with a 25-8 win over the Panthers.
- Converse finished with 66 points, 49 kills, 10 aces, 7 blocks, 43 assists and 55 digs against Ferrum.
- Bree Lyons led the team with 12 kills, Megan Carpenter finished second on the team with 10 kills and Ava Trentman finished third on the team with 8 kills. Trentman led the team in blocks for the second straight match with five on the afternoon.
- Alysha Arroyo led the team with 34 assists and Noemia Chiacchio had a team best 20 digs against the Panthers.
Next Up:
Converse will be back at home this Wednesday night against Southern Wesleyan University. It will be the Valkyries Dig Pink Night with first serve starting at 6:00 p.m.
