Converse Claims Northwest Division Title Outright

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team defeated North Greenville 3-1 on Tuesday evening inside Hayes Gym.
 
With the win the Valkyries improve to 17-6 overall and 13-3 in Conference Carolinas play. Converse clinched the Conference Carolinas Northwest Division Title outright with the win, the Valkyries have an unblemished 7-0 record within the Division. This is also the second straight season the Valkyries have won 13 conference games and they are currently 10-1 in the month of October. Meanwhile, North Greenville drops to 10-13 overall and 8-8 in Conference Carolinas action.
 
In the opening set, the two teams were tied through the first 12 points of the period. Then North Greenville made the first move and jumped out to a slime 9-6 advantage over the Valkyries. Converse stayed within striking distance and trailed 15-13 midway through the period. Another late run by the Trailblazers had North Greenville out in front 21-16 late in the stanza. North Greenville went on to win the opening set 25-22.
 
Converse was the aggressive team in the second period as they jumped out to a 7-4 advantage over North Greenville. A few moments later the Valkyries held a 14-6 lead over the Trailblazers. The Valkyries tied the match up at one set each following a 25-13 win over North Greenville in the second set.
 
In the third period, Converse opened the frame on a 6-0 run against the Trailblazers. Despite holding a 7-1 lead at one point during the set, Converse allowed North Greenville to rally and get back in the set. The Trailblazers rallied and eventually held a 10-9 edge over Converse. Converse once again countered and quickly took a 16-12 lead over North Greenville.
 
Converse was unable to put the Trailblazers away as North Greenville eventually tied the period at 21. A few moments later, Converse held set point at 24-22 but the Trailblazers rallied and turned the tables on the Valkyries. Quickly the Valkyries found themselves on the wrong side of a 25-24 scoreboard. The two squads then traded points till the set was tied at 29, then Converse won the final two points of the set to go up 2-1 over North Greenville.
 
In the fourth set, Converse rushed out to an 8-3 lead over North Greenville. The Valkyries continued to pound the Trailblazers defense and held a 14-7 advantage midway through the period. Converse held a off a late rally by North Greenville and won the final set by a score of 25-21.
 
Converse finished with 83 points, 69 kills, 11 aces, 3 blocks, 69 assists and 82 digs. The Valkyries 69 assists against North Greenville are a new program record for assists in a single game. Alysha Arroyo's 59 assists also set a new program record for assists in a single game, Arroyo also became just the second Valkyrie setter to reach 1500 assists in a career.
 
Megan Carpenter led the team with 16 kills, Samiya Bolton finished with 15 kills and Alayah Robertson finished with 14 kills for the Valkyries. Noemia Chiacchio led the team with five service aces in the match, while Bree Lyons had a team high 32 digs. Chiacchio finished second on the team with 11 digs and Landon Garbade contributed 10 digs in the win.  
 
Next Up:
Converse will stay on the road with a trip to UNC Pembroke on Friday evening.
