Converse Volleyball Weekend Recap

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team had a great weekend defeating UNC Pembroke 3-2 on Friday night and sweeping UVA Wise on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the wins the Valkyries improve to 19-6 overall and 14-3 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries 14 conference wins are the most since joining Conference Carolinas over 20 years ago. Converse has recorded 10 wins at home for the first time in program history and they have currently won six straight. The Valkyries sweep over UVA Wise on Saturday also marked the Valkyries 10th sweep of the season, an accomplishment they have not obtained since the 2006 season (13 sweeps).
 
Match One: Converse 3, UNC Pembroke 2
  • It was a tough road matchup for the Valkyries on Friday evening as they battled the Braves in a Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship rematch from a season ago.
  • In the opening set, the two squads were deadlocked through the first 24 points of the period. UNC Pembroke made the first move a four point run to take the first advantage of the match.
  • Converse rallied late but each time UNC Pembroke held off the Valkyries offensive spurt. The Braves won the opening set by a final score of 25-22.
  • In the second set, UNC Pembroke raced out to an 11-5 lead over the Valkyries. Following a timeout the Valkyries settled down and a 6-0 spurt had Converse back in the set down 14-13.
  • Knotted at 18 the Braves used a 7-1 run to close out the set and win by a final set score of 25-19.
  • UNC Pembroke opened up the third set on a 7-3 run against the Valkyries. Following an early timeout, Converse rallied and trailed 12-10 midway through the period. The early run gave the Valkyries momentum as they used an 8-0 run to go up 18-12.
  • UNC Pembroke answered with an 8-2 run to tie the set at 20 all. The two teams went back-and-forth, then tied at 23 Converse made the last move and won the final two points of the set.
  • Converse used the momentum from the third set win to jump out to a 7-3 advantage at the start of the fourth period. Midway through the set the Valkyries held an 18-10 lead over UNC Pembroke and held off a late run to win the fourth set 25-18.
  • In the fifth set the two teams were tied through the first 10 points of the period. Then UNC Pembroke won three straight points to take an 8-5 lead over Converse. The Valkyries countered with a four point spurt to take back the momentum at 9-8.
  • The Valkyries continued to hold the momentum and held a 14-11 lead over UNC Pembroke. The Braves rallied and held off three straight match points to tie the set at 14.
  • The two teams then went back-and-forth with each team holding off the others match point against one another. Trailing 18-17 Converse rallied and won the final three points of the set to take the period and the match against UNC Pembroke.
  • The Valkyries finished with 87 points, a new program record 70 kills, 5 aces, 12 blocks, 65 assists and 116 digs.
  • Bree Lyons led the team with 18 kills, Samiya Bolton finished second on the team with 14 kills and Megan Carpenter finished third with 13 kills. Alayah Robertson led the team with seven blocks, Lyons had five blocks and Alysha Arroyo had four blocks.
  • Arroyo finished with a team high 53 assists on the evening and Noemia Chiacchio had 29 digs. Lilli Redifer finished second on the team with 19 digs and Land Garbade finished third on the team with 18 digs.
 
Match Two: Converse 3, UVA Wise 0
  • In the second match of the weekend the Valkyries handled business in front of a homecoming crowd inside the Weisiger Center.
  • The Valkyries came out ready to go as they opened the first set on a 6-1 run against UVA Wise. Converse eventually extended their lead to 10-4 against the Cavaliers.
  • Holding a 19-9 lead in the opening set, UVA Wise made a small run late the Valkyries won the opening set 25-13.
  • In the second set the Valkyries once again jumped out to an early 12-5 advantage over UVA Wise. A few moments later the Valkyries held an 18-7 lead over the Cavaliers. Converse cruised to a 25-14 second set win.
  • In the final set of the afternoon, Converse once more jumped out to a 8-3 lead over UVA Wise. The Cavaliers kept it competitive and trailed 12-7 midway through the third set. A 7-0 run by Converse but the set out of reach at 20-9, and the Valkyries went on to complete the sweep with a 25-15 third set win.
  • Converse finished with 56 points, 42 kills, 8 aces, 6 blocks, 36 assists and 52 digs. Ariel Bryant led the team with 11 kills, while Megan Carpenter and Alysha Arroyo both contributed 8 kills in the win.
  • Bryant finished with a team high 4 aces and Lilli Redifer added a trio of aces. Alayah Robertson once again led the team with five blocks on the afternoon.
  • Arroyo also led the team with 31 assists, Noemia Chiacchio led the team with 18 digs and Bryant finished with 15 digs.
 
Next Up:
Converse will hit the road this coming week with a trip to Belmont Abbey on Tuesday evening. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. in Belmont, N.C.
