WINGATE, N.C. – The Converse University Field Hockey team went 0-2 this weekend with losses to nationally ranked Newberry and Wingate.
With the loss the Valkyries drop to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in South Atlantic Conference play. Converse has now lost five straight matches and fall to 3-4 in road games this year.
Match One: #3 Newberry 8, Converse 2
- Newberry scored early and often against the Valkyries in the first half of the game on Saturday afternoon.
- The Wolves outscored Converse 5-0 in the opening half and outshot the Valkyries 12-0.
- In the third quarter the Valkyries were outshot 8-1, but the Valkyries got on the board with a goal from Kilee Bradeen.
- In the fourth quarter, Delfi Gonzalez found Edith Swaan for the Valkyries second goal of the contest.
- Newberry outshot Converse 29-3 overall and 21-3 in shots on goal. The Valkyries recorded 13 saves but the Wolves had a game high 11 corners against the Valkyries.
Match Two: Wingate 3, Converse 2
- It was a heart breaking loss for Converse on Sunday afternoon as Wingate won in the final two minutes of the game.
- The Bulldogs outscored the Valkyries 2-0 in the first half, despite Converse holding a 9-7 lead in shots taken.
- In the third quarter, Remington Lewis found Brooke Burgin for the first goal of the game for Converse.
- In the fourth quarter, Mayla Weissenrieder found Bradeen for the game tying goal against the Bulldogs.
- Then with two minutes left, Erika Neuhoff found Riley Robinson for the go-ahead goal for Wingate.
- Converse outshot Wingate 14-9 overall and 10-6 in shots on goal. Wingate collected more saves on the afternoon with eight but Converse had a game high seven corners.

The Converse Field Hockey team will be back at Weisiger Stadium this Tuesday evening for their annual Pink Out Game against Belmont Abbey. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
