SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team kicked a five match losing streak on Tuesday night at Weisiger Stadium with a 1-0 win over Belmont Abbey.
With the win the Valkyries improve to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in South Atlantic Conference action, while Belmont Abbey drops to 9-6 overall and 7-3 in South Atlantic Conference play. Converse is now 5-3 at home this season.
It was a scoreless game through one quarter of action on Tuesday evening. The Valkyries led in shots taken 4-2 in the opening period and Belmont Abbey came away with a pair of saves in the quarter.
It only took 42 seconds into the second quarter for
Edith Swaan to connect with
Kilee Bradeen for the Valkyries lone goal of the contest. For Bradeen this now the second time this season she has scored in three consecutive matches.
In the second half, shots came at premium as the Valkyries outshot Belmont Abbey 5-3 in the half. In total the Valkyries outshot the Crusaders 14-7 overall and 6-5 in shots on goal. Saves were even between the two teams at five each, while Belmont Abbey edged out the Valkyries 7-6 in corner attempts.
