Valkyries Falter Against Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C.  – The Converse University field hockey team fell 1-0 to Belmont Abbey on Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
 
With the loss the Valkyries have now lost three straight and drop to 7-5 overall. Tonight's shutout loss was the first in almost a calendar year for the Valkyries, as they were last shutout by Lincoln Memorial on the road 1-0 on October 23, 2024. Meanwhile, Belmont Abbey improves to 9-4 overall on the season.
 
In the first quarter, Jillian Cain found Hailey Leatherman for the goal of the contest with three minutes to go in the opening period. Converse had their chances throughout the match but were outshot 12-8 overall and 8-4 in shots on goal.
 
Converse recorded seven total saves in the match, while Belmont Abbey recorded a quartet of saves. The Crusaders recorded 14 penalty corners in the contest, while the Valkyries only recorded a corner in the first and second periods.  
 
Amparo Figueroa and Edith Swaan both had two shots each, while Alina Puentes recorded six saves in the match for the Valkyries defense.
 
Next Up:
The Converse Field Hockey team will stay on the road this weekend with trips to Newberry and Wingate.
