Valkyries Hang With Nationally Ranked Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C.  – The Converse University field hockey team fell 2-1 to #8 Lander on Tuesday evening at Frank Hill Stadium.
 
With the loss the Valkyries drop to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in South Atlantic Conference action, meanwhile, Lander improves to 8-3 overall and 5-3 in South Atlantic Conference play.
 
In the opening half the two teams played to a scoreless stalemate, with Converse holding the edge in shots taken at 4-3 over the Bearcats. However, in the third quarter the Lander offense came alive and outshot Converse 5-1 in the period. Leira Van Tilburg scored the first goal of the contest in the third quarter of action.
 
In the final quarter of play, Converse came out aggressive and tied the match following a Mayla Weissenrieder goal. It wasn't long until Lander's Victoria Hulst scored the game-winner against the Valkyries with five minutes left in the game.
 
Converse was outshot 12-8 overall and 5-4 in shots on goal. The two teams tied with three saves each, while Lander edged out the Valkyries 9-8 in corner attempts.

Next Up:
The Converse Field Hockey team will have a week off before traveling to Belmont Abbey on Tuesday evening.
