Valkyries Outlast Trailblazers For Divisional Dub

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A first-half goal from senior defender Giulia Rodrigues proved to the be the difference as the Converse University women's soccer team (3-4-2, 2-2-1 Conference Carolinas) defeated the North Greenville Trailblazers (2-5-1, 2-2-1 Conference Carolinas) by a final score of 1-0 Wednesday night at Weisiger Stadium.

Sophomore goalkeeper Gabriella Gudeman recorded her third solo shutout of the season. She recorded nine saves on 16 shots faced, nine on-goal.

The Valkyries found themselves with nine shots, seven on-goal, over the first 33 minutes prior to Rodrigues's goal, but NGU keeper Anna Rickle made seven Herculean saves to keep the game even. But in the 34th minute, on a corner delivered perfectly from junior forward Hannah Liebig from, Rodrigues headed the ball past Rickle, securing the eventual game-winning goal for the Valkyries.

North Greenville attempted three shots for the remainder of the half, producing two more saves for Gudeman.

Gudeman earned her keep in the second half as well with a quartet of saves. The Valkyries pushed for a second goal throughout the second half, but were unable to find the elusive second goal.

Next Up:
After a brief homestand, the Valkyries are back on the road on Saturday, Oct. 4 as they head to Belmont, North Carolina to take on another divisional foe, the Belmont Abbey Crusaders. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
