Valkyries Early Second-Half Comeback Attempt Thwarted By Saints

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Playing for the first time in front of their home crowd during the 2024 season, the Converse University women's soccer team (1-1) fell 4-2 to the Flagler Saints (1-0-1) despite an attempted comeback early in the second half.

The Valkyries competed early with the Peach Belt's top brass as Converse dominated the possession early, booting some beautiful balls towards the Saints' goal. The Valkyries were unable to find the back of the net however.

Skillful ball movement allowed Flagler to attempt a shot that went past the Valkyries' keeper giving them a lead in the 37th minute. Four minutes later the Saints doubled that lead with another goal. It was the final shot of the half as Flagler took their 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

Sophomore Hannah Liebig alluded the defense to score the Valkyries' first goal of the game just under two minutes into the second half. Less than ten minutes later the Valkyries' top scorer from their opening contest against Allen, junior Jasmine Hernandez sank a penalty kick to draw the game even once again.

Flagler responded less than two minutes later with a go-ahead goal and found the back of the net once more in the 80th minute to bring the game to its final score of 4-2.

The Valkyries return to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 11 as they head to Anderson for a regional matchup with the Anderson Trojans beginning at 5 P.M.
